Our first exclusive test! Fruity Dyno Bites vs. Fruity Pebbles.
Which is better? What's the better value? Stay tuned.
So the age old question is asked, is it really worth the trade-off in taste to get more cereal for your money. Sounds simple enough, but we put these cereals through a rigorous testing procedure. We base our results on the taste, packaging, extra information on the boxes like games, nutritional facts, etc. To start off we took the always delicious Fruity Pebbles and it's bagged competitor, Fruity Dyno Bites.
First off, on all the test we use a standard bowl. We do blind taste tests as well as conventional taste tests to really appreciate the finite details of the cereal.
We also have anywhere from 2-4 judges tasting the cereal to help get a definitive winner.
Test #1: Packaging
The box is a traditional design that always tends to fit cupboards better than bags, however, as the bag starts to get less full, it's easier to snake it into difficult spots. The Fruity Pebbles box has some fun(for kids) games on the back while the Fruity Dyno Bites is clearly lacking in this area.
However, one thing that gave the Fruity Dyno Bites a clear advantage is the easy pour spout that is resealable. Several months after this test, the Fruity Dyno Bites are still fresh. Yes, you can get plastic containers to keep your boxed cereal from getting stale, but this is built-in to the packaging.
Advantage: Fruity Dyno Bites
Test #2: Taste
Taste is quite subjective, but the consensus on this test was that the Fruity Dyno Bites tasted much sweeter. This was odd considering it had less sugar than Fruity Pebbles. However in the blind taste tests, the results were conclusive that overall, Fruity Pebbles was picked as the winner.
Advantage: Fruity Pebbles
Test #3: Nutrition
Both cereals lived up to their advertised claim of 15 essential vitamins and minerals. Fruity Dyno Bites had the same amount on those 15 vitamins and minerals. There was only one thing that was much different between the two and the Fruity Pebbles had more potassium. This little bit gives it the edge.
Advantage: Fruity Pebbles
Test #4: Cost
Overall cost was higher for Fruity Dyno Bites, however, the cost per ounce is definitely in favor of the bagged cereal. There's less per ounce in Fruity Pebbles, but the gap wasn't as wide as you'd think.
Advantage: Fruity Dyno Bites
Test #5: Features
The Fruity Pebbles does have games on the back on the box that help it's case. However, the resealable spout shoots this over the top. It's a simple addition, but it allows the cereal to stay fresh much longer and makes it easy to pour.
Adantage: Fruity Dyno Bites
Winner: Fruity Dyno Bites
The value is there, the taste is very similar, and the resealable bag puts it over hte top.
